If you sleep on your side, you may notice that your knees press together or your top leg slides forward during the night. Many side sleepers use a knee pillow to keep their legs comfortably positioned. Here's what to look for when choosing one.

1. Material: memory foam vs. fiberfill

Memory foam molds to the shape of your legs and holds its form through the night, while fiberfill pillows tend to flatten over time. If you want support that stays consistent, memory foam is usually the way to go.

2. Shape: contoured beats flat

A contoured or heart-shaped design sits between the knees and is less likely to shift out of place than a flat, rectangular cushion.

3. Size: compact enough to stay put

A pillow that's too large can feel bulky. A compact size, around 25 × 23 × 13 cm, fits comfortably between the knees without taking up extra space in bed.

4. Cover: breathable and washable

You'll use it every night, so a breathable fabric helps it feel cooler, and a removable, machine-washable cover makes it easy to keep clean.

How to use a knee pillow

• Lie on your side and place the pillow between your knees.
• Adjust it until your legs feel comfortably positioned.
• Use it nightly as part of your regular sleep routine.
